Liverpool Food and Drink Festival 2011

The Liverpool Food & Drink Festival is set to take place from 1-8 September, starting with an exciting weekend launch event in the heart of Sefton Park (1-2 September). The open-air festival launch weekend will bring together some of the region’s finest local producers, as well as the city’s top restaurants and bars, for a celebration of the city’s thriving food and drink scene.

The Sefton Park event will feature a real ale beer festival, master classes, and celebrity chef demonstrations, as well as wine tasting and street food sampling. The London Carriage Works will be bringing the festival’s first pop up restaurant.

There will be plenty to keep budding young foodies entertained with a dedicated children’s area, featuring a Junior Chef’s Academy, Lego, edible jewellery making, biscuit decorating and seed planting. Children will also have the opportunity to meet some of the animals from Church Farm. Chocoholics of all ages will love the Heavenly Chocolate Garden, where visitors can sample some tasty treats and have a go at making their own chocolate.

As part of the launch weekend, Wallasey-born ‘Great British Bake Off’ judge, Paul Hollywood, will be hosting the final heat of the ‘Great Merseyside Bake Off’. Open to all amateur bakers across the region, the competition will culminate in a bake off between 12 finalists during the Sefton Park launch weekend.

Visitors will also have the chance to watch celebrity chefs cook in the open air on a specially designed grill and also sample some of their mouth-watering creations. Top Malaysian chef, Norman Musa, will be sharing some top tips during his Malaysian cooking master classes, while Lisa Faulkner will be demonstrating favourite recipes from her bestselling book.

Tom Kitchin, Aiden Byrne and The Fabulous Baker Brothers, will be challenged to create sumptuous delights, using only the finest ingredients from food suppliers and local producers taking part in the festival, including artisan bakers The French Corner, Port of Lancaster Smokehouse and the Chilli Pepper Company.

The week-long Liverpool Food & Drink Festival, organised by Liverpool-based SK Events, is celebrating its fifth year as one of the city’s top annual events. Denise Harris, Managing Director at SK Events, said: “It’s great to see how much the festival’s reputation has grown over the years and we are delighted to have had such strong interest from some of the country’s most respected and successful food stars.

“There really is something for everyone at this year’s launch weekend in Sefton Park, from children’s cookery classes and interactive workshops to celebrity chef demonstrations and master classes from our own talented local chefs and producers. The Liverpool Food & Drink Festival celebrations will continue for the whole week with special events and offers at bars, restaurants and arts venues across the city.”

She added: “The Liverpool Food & Drink Festival has become a real highlight of the foodie calendar and we look forward to staging another fantastic event this year.”

Tom Herbert, fifth generation baker and one half of the Fabulous Baker Brothers, said: “We’re hugely excited about taking part in the Liverpool Food & Drink Festival. The city has a great vibe with a fantastic food and drink scene, which is all going to be transported to the middle of Sefton Park for the launch weekend.”

Thousands are expected to flock to Sefton Park for the Liverpool Food & Drink Festival launch weekend. Celebrations will continue for the rest of the week (1-8September) with special events and offers at various venues across the city, including a wine tasting evening in the Palm House at Sefton Park, the prestigious Liverpool Food & Drink Awards and a closing party at the Epstein theatre, in conjunction with Sound City.
