There’s a rich blend of tea shops and new venues where you can sample one of the finest traditions of British culture springing up in Liverpool; afternoon tea is rapidly becoming one of our favourite times of day.

From Leaf to Cuthbert’s great care is being taken to select the finest leafy blends, the scrummiest clotted cream and only the lightest of scones. This summer we welcome Jam Restaurant & Tea Bar, on Sir Thomas Street offering over 25 different styles of tea.

It’s the first restaurant venue for husband and wife team Joe and Anne Marie. He’s worked at some of the city’s finest hotels including Radisson, Crowne Plaza and the Marriott. “I definitely think afternoon tea is back”, says Joe. An independent venue, the team say once it gets dark the mood will be relaxed with the offer of “casual fine dining”. “We plan on serving ours in a very modern environment”, explains Joe. “So no chintz in sight”.

Open from 8am until 11pm, Jam will serve brunch until 6pm with a dining option. For afternoon tea there will be homemade cakes and pastries with those 25 flavours of loose leaf tea. It isn’t all dry, though, there’s a bar for those who prefer a cocktail or a wine option. The team will even have a few signature cocktails. Health is big on the menu, with smoothies on offer along with low calorie and gluten free options. “Even the tea can have health benefits,” says Joe, “which is why we’ve chosen so many different flavours.”

Afternoon tea might once have been an indulgence, but Jam are setting a new standard for a healthy alternative to a traditional treat.
