Liverpool, This Is Your 2016
Ah, 2016. What a year.
It’s that time to look back on the ups and downs of it; revelling in your successes and shaking your head at your mistakes. But above all, it’s a perfect time for reminiscing and seeing how far you’ve come.
It might seem like it was out to get us all at points ,but on closer inspection, it looks like 2016 dealt Liverpool a pretty good hand.
Just to prove it, we’ve scaled the year for our most loved events, news and all the damn good stuff that happened in this beautiful city of ours: with some stonking pics of our city, taken by you, for the ultimate feel good factor.
So Liverpool, this is your 2016. Here goes…
Our boys came back
Which has unsurprisingly resulted in a yearlong flurry of amazing Instagram posts…
We got that glow
Thanks to Liverpool Lantern Company and Liverpool City Council, we sure had those sunnies at the ready for our very own Festival of Light.
We honoured our Chinese friends
2016 was the Year of the Monkey and boy, did we go ape.
…But it wasn’t all monkeying around…
ExploreGB was in town come March, so the sleeves got rolled up to show the country exactly what we’re made of.
Unity got the news of a £750,000 makeover
THEN they got a beautiful looking fund of £435,000 from Arts Council England…
…And we’re pretty sure everyone did a happy dance a bit like this:
We chowed down on more beloved stew that we all call ‘home’
You could practically hear Scousers across the world slurping on the stuff for Global Scouse Day (plus we helped out with a recipe)
We kicked it good
Thanks to the UK’s best and biggest celebration of Sneaker Culture, Laces Out! in March
And we liked it so bloody much, they gave us round 2 in October
We became a hotbed of (epic) new places to stay
Like Shankly Hotel, Eurohostel & Pullman
Which landed us some boss views…
And jeeeez, did March get us in the ‘spirit’…
…cheers to the Albert Dock Rum Festival
We paired horses with cider again
And we no joke hyperventilated at the LIMF line up
So you can imagine what the real thing was like:
We got more balls than footie ones
thanks to the Liverpool Hope International Tennis Tournament
But it can’t all be fun and games when we’ve got another International Festival of Business to boss
We’ve had boss plays coming out of our ears…
And Biennial sorted our art-addiction out again…
We became Festival City for summer
And rightfully so…
Did we mention we smashed the UK Festival Awards?
HUGE congratulations to Positive Vibration, Sound City, Liverpool Music Week and Creamfields
It’s a good job we got some amazing new watering holes to slurp up that good tastin’ glory in then
We got pumped up by The Jam
Because The Young Idea treated us to a deliciously digital exhibition of the Mod-Gods at Cunard Building
Speaking of the Cunard Building…
One of our Graces turned 100
Oh, and speaking of birthdays…
We got crowned quite a lot…
Like coming third in TripAdvisor’s ‘Traveller’s Choice Awards’
…Or ‘Best Port of Call’ for the 3rd time by Cruise Critic
…and ranked the 2nd happiest city in the UK
And what about that view from the Museum of Liverpool?
Oh yeah, that got crowned the UK’s ‘Best Window with a View’ too
We got our geek on at MCM Comic Con
And we got immortalised with our own emoji‘s
…and thanks to Draw & Code, we got all virtual
We walked our own (blue) carpet…
Because the Beatles film doc Eight Days A Week had its world premiere right here at FACT
…Then we actually starred in one…
Thanks to J.K.’s (and Newt Scamander’s) book Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them
…which resulted in lead role, Eddie Redmayne, BIGGING US UP…
“My OMGB moment was probably shooting in Liverpool…That’s a city that I just love and find endlessly inspiring through its history but also through its architecture, and we had the most wonderful time there.”
We partied with those lucky Irish folk again
We proved that we should never underestimate someone
And we reminded each other that it doesn’t matter who you love
…just as long as you keep loving
The world watched us as we became the centre of a political landslide
And the city became awash with red for the last weekend of September
We helped put smiles on kids faces with DreamWorks Lights
Like little Patrick’s:
We got them justice
To those who were lost, Rest in Peace. To those that remain, you will never walk alone.
And above all, we’ve loved being able to still call Liverpool our home
So thank you Liverpool – we couldn’t have done 2016 without you 💛💙💜💚
If you think that we’ve missed something out – tweet us! This was your year after all.
