Stronger In Unity

“This is a real vote of confidence from Arts Council England…”

A different kind of applause rippled through Liverpool’s Unity Theatre on Friday. Awards of hundreds of thousands of pounds tend to have that kind of effect.

Unity, one of the best loved theatres in Liverpool, has tonnes of character. The theatres building has seen it all and entertained countless thousands.

But its last significant renovation was in 1998, so last year Unity announced plans for a ambitious ,£750,000 makeover.

At a special announcement held at the theatre on February 12, Unity revealed that in under two months, they have already secured £435,000, the full amount applied for, from Arts Council England.

An overjoyed Matthew Lindley, Unity’s Artistic Director and CEO, spoke to it’s Liverpool at the event:

“This is a real vote of confidence from Arts Council England. I joined the Unity almost a year ago to the day, and ever since that first day our theatre’s special role in the region and beyond has been very clear to me.

“This generous award gives us the opportunity to ensure we are a theatre for the 21st Century. We’re making Unity stronger and more resilient, enabling us to be an even greater place for our artists and audiences to dream.”

The money will be used to open out Unity’s foyer and bar spaces, improve soundproofing between the theatre’s two performance spaces, build on the theatre’s sustainability and improving its digital profile.

The remaining fundraising target is £125,000. Unity aims to raise £75,000 through trust and foundation applications and the remaining £50,000 through individual giving.

Unity’s Executive Director, Sue Williams, said: “We have twelve months to raise the further £50,000 needed to carry out all our vital work. In this time if every visitor donated just £1, this could be achieved.”
