They’re more used to platinum and gold, but the Beatles next accolade looks set to be bronze thanks to a ‘monumental’ gift from The Cavern Club to the city of Liverpool.

The night club birth place of the Beatles has commissioned sculptor Andrew Edwards to create an eight-metre tall statues of John, Paul, George and Ringo which they are donating to the city.

The plan is for the sculpture to be installed on Liverpool waterfront’s Pier Head.

It is hoped that the commission, which cost a cool £200,000, will be placed prominently at the waterfront site near Brunswick Street, and in front of the Three Graces.

The very first glimpse of the statues was revealed during International Beatle Week  convention held at the Adelphi Hotel at the end of August.

Chris Butler of Castle Fine Arts foundry is behind the idea. He was inspired by the giant image of the Fab Four on the front of HMV in Liverpool One.

Writing in the Beatleweek festival brochure during the summer he said the statue would be “a monument to a moment, when the world was truly shaken. And it started here in Liverpool”.

Liverpool City Council have submitted the application and expect a decision after a period of consultation.
